git pull just grabs updates and adds those changes to your current branch - it doesn't merge it in that way.

currently, the default branch is master but someone can one day change it to something else, so no it is not always necessarily

Not for every repository. Git pull just updates the local branch which is what you have to do to update the core. If you've made local changes it will ask you to stash your changes but if you're not making any you don't have to care.
