fair enough. i can't say why it worked out that way. it was repeatable for me doing the normal way. i don't know why it was breaking the compiler

yes, i did. on VM, though, so not sure if guest additions interferes

The instructions for both MariaDB and MySQL specify g++ so I think you didn't fully follow it.
