I don't know how it works when pulling too. I remember trying some npc bot like thing, possibly some mangos-based, that didn't care unless you aggroed something and obviously that leads to your death most of the time unless you're a tank.

in my exp they both have a lot of settings and you can get them pretty life-like but being an expert in either goes along way

I've watched a few boss fights in Naxx with npcbots where the youtuber really knows his stuff and has tons of macros for the bots and it's very authentic

but yeah I personally like the idea of building your own team through use of your alts, feels more personal, whereas npcbots is more like bots for hired help, even though you can in some regards own them permanently
