because if you follow the config style rules then you should be able to see the default value for each config in the comments above the config

That's true even today as people edit the dist from time to time instead of making a copy of it anyway. They could just as well remove something from that one.

aw I went to eat and came back to a wall of text haha. I mean that the conf.dist file is used, and if I want to change one single setting I just need a conf file with only that setting in (and it gets the rest defaulted from the dist file)
