No emulator is limitless but the best way to answer your question is to try it. Set a limit and increase it if the limit is reached and the performance isn't affected and keep doing that until you notice any issues.

I remember I had issues with that before, item still wasn't visible or worked correctly

I don't know how to create custom items, and I have no interest in learning, but display ids etc are tied to their items so it would need a client patch - that's about all I know.
