okay... it looks like i finally found out what was happening. (figures after i ask on here haha). my linux install was missing "/etc/resolv.conf" for some reason and would not recreate at reboot. i had to use "systemctl enable systemd-resolved.service" and "systemctl start systemd-resolved.service" to have the file created at reboot then edit the file and add nameservers so it would be able to lookup domains. one of the symptoms i was experiencing was being able to ping ip addresses but not domain names. it's seems to be working so far... maybe this will help someone else some day. sorry for bugging you.
