Can anyone answer my very generic and probably dumb question So for some reason it's hard to wrap my head around this whole AzerothCore/Trinity thingy. What exactly is this software? I mean is it a reverse engineered WOW, is it just a tool that makes it possible to create servers, what are it's powers? Can you actually edit the game yourself, like adding new items/NPCs?

The client part of it all is reverse engineered but the core itself isn't. You can modify the core and the database to make changes you want like edit boss mechanics, modify spell effects (like damage), add/remove/move npcs, objects etc etc.

Aight I'll try a medium instance then, only half a cent an hour - not going to run it all the time, just when I'm online

I don't quite follow, the core isn't? How do you make changes to the mechanics then?

The core is written from the ground up and how the client works is reverse engineered to know what the server needs to do.

The core handles things like creatures, objects, items, loot and so on - anything the client doesn't have hard-coded is handled by the server.

Ohhh, so the core is built from the ground up by the developers of AC? That's really impressive

Well, not by AzerothCore. It's all based on something - and there are more cores available than TrinityCore and AzerothCore.

AzerothCore is afaik based on TrinityCore - what TrinityCore is based on or if it was built from scratch I don't know.
