The difference isn't big between them. MariaDB *is* based on MySQL so there wouldn't be. I just enjoyed MariaDB because more worked out-of-the-box. The limitation in length of queries isn't there by default as in MySQL - which of course you can fix but you shouldn't have to. But for me the performance is a lot better with MariaDB than MySQL and that's why I've stuck with it for so long.
