Always used to remove the .dist extension, seems like that's not working

Make a copy of them. Then remove .dist from the copies.

Yea but when I open worldserver, will it read from the .conf file and not the .dist?

.dist files are intended for distribution. Any code looking for configuration should be reading the .conf files.
