My theory is that only private servers that intend to make money off it will end up with the best content. But not the best code

There's a lot of hackfixes out there, people think it works perfectly but it's really a band-aid and will break eventually.

I participated in modding and community patches of different games, such as King's Bounty, Heroes 3, Anno series, Stronghold (it's pretty hard to fix, the code is crap). Everywhere everything was finished to the end. The fixes that the developers didn't bring in were made by the player communities. And Heroes 3 has gathered a huge base of modders, and came out a bunch of directions from Hota to Wog to Era.

to be honest my personal opinion is that projects like this are shooting themselves into foot right from start....it was and still is intended to be recreated 1:1 with all of blizzard shit structures etc i can see where is that comming from but thats simply not good way of doing it especially in long term and for newcomers

That's why modules exist and since it's also open-source, you could very easily fork it and modify it however you want.
