Two questions for making a fresh setup on Ubuntu 22.04:
1: is MariaDB or MySQL preferred by AzerothCore?
2: I see the RAM recommendations on the wiki, but what about CPU? Specifically core count. Is 4 cores all that's needed, or can it take advantage of more?

1. The difference between MariaDB and MySQL is mostly political
2. 4 cores would be plenty, WoW emulators are mostly memory bound

I supported around 50 active players with 4 cores and 8G of RAM

Hopefully one last question before I start actually running it, what does the wiki mean exactly by "illegal public servers"? Servers that make code changes but don't open source them?

No, any public server is technically illegal for copyright reasons

It's not criminal if that's what you're wondering
