Yes, the default rates are try to as close as possible to original WotLK rates.

so the rates for items should be higher to be easier obtainable as they are questing/hunting less than normal

But also with 8x increase drop rate, they only defeat one creature to finish the quest so they would receive XP much faster. They would also never have time to play the game, because each quest is complete so quickly. Of course, this is for item collection quests only.

If you are concern with player leveling too fast for profession, for example, it maybe better design to increase profession gain rate instead.

This is only my suggestion. I suggest to test any change you make and if it is fun for your group, then it is a good change.
