Earned myself an MVP title on twinkinfo.com with that, because without it the Starter Edition twink community would probably never has come into existence, never mind grow into the most popular bracket for several years.

short version - it was using addon-to-addon communication channels to route what people put into the game's chat around the blocks put in place for trial accounts. Blizzard didn't have a problem with it doing that because you had to opt in by installing it, so gold sellers couldn't use it to spam anyone else.
Long version, it was grabbing all kinds of data...

And there was a module to broadcast when your battleground queue popped, so even though we couldn't make groups without help from a subbed account (although there was another module to automate that, so they didn't have to do anything besides have the addon installed), we could see if 10 players names showed up in this window at exactly the same time, which would suggest they're all going to get into the same battleground if they accept.

They let starter edition accounts sub for a month, join guilds, and then keep using guild chat after the subscription ended.

And without the chat part needed, barely anyone installs the addon any more, although the current maintainers have been keeping the premade thing working.
