there is net stop / net start on windows, but i understand actually registering system services is a bit of an unsolved problem

Yes, I can start the process through powershell and everything but there's no failsafe in case someone decides to close the terminal for some stupid reason etc. I never bothered to sit down with it long enough, though.

conventional wisdom says to bundle NSIS but then you've added another dependency

The good thing is that powershell really helps in many situations, like automating the config updates etc. Not that I will learn it because I wouldn't use it anyway so it's wasted time.

some things like apache httpd actually have it written into the source code how to register themselves as a system service for the win32 build

But all those things are always possible on Linux too.

Yeah, you can add/start/stop/remove services from Powershell but you have no easy way to send commands to the processes. I mean, if I run my script and tell it to kill the server - it'll send saveall to the server, wait 3 seconds and then kill the server. That's something I *tried* to do in Powershell but nope.

oh, NSSM, not NSIS
