If it's bound only to localhost, it's fine. No one can access it from any other system. If it's accessible in any way from the outside, it's extremely important to stay as safe as possible.

Oh yeah, most of my testing is done on my personal machine (since this is a hobby for me) so I've got that as locked down as I can

Yeah, that's how I treat best practices. Each one has a point/purpose, and for some situations, they're not relevant. I'd love to see someone pushing for a firewall setup on a closed network.
