I just killed a mob, not using any addon to show me percentages but I popped 2 arcane shot at level 80 with no equipment and it did no more than 40% of the mobs health and the pet did the rest - got loot

For pets the threshold is lower. I believe a single hit is enough to make you eligible

Yeah, I set status text to show percentages, set pet on passive, shot 1 arcane shot on a level 54 mob in LBRS - it did 7% and I did get loot after the pet finished the rest.

I would almost ask if the mob whatever his name is with all those strange characters just didn't drop any

like the pyroguard embersser just dropped nothing, and it wasn't an issue of my pet doing to much dmg?

I don't know if he just didn't drop anything but like I said I did 7% damage to a mob and it did drop loot.
