iirc there are only two times that the client keeps an active auth connection
1. On the initial account login, from when you click "Login" until "Enter World"
2. From being in the world to the char selection screen, when you click "Change Realm" until "Enter World"
I don't recall the client ever disconnecting if the connection is dropped, though you could probably enable network logging and look at when a session is created/destroyed to verify
