I think for you to be able to achieve the same. you would have to actual make a module.
Because you've to create an actual item. Which has an ID otherwise you've make copies of all the transmogable items in the game and give them a new id for your scroll of a essence.
The module probably would create an item of X value and foward (and check if its exist with the same ID before creating) and you would create Essense Scroll: X item when the transmog it created.

I cant duplicate all items as you said, that require client dbc modifications

Your generic scroll that you get from your bosses has an ID of 500.
So you may get (via drop) that 500 item.
But let's say you want to copy "Mighty Sword" of an ID of 700.
So module would create an item: Scroll of: <name> (Mighty Sword) this would make a new item let's say our Incrementor starts at 90'000'000 so this will be ID: 90'000'001 Name: Scroll of: Mighty Sword (and probably refer to the origin ID (700) for Name, Description and Model.
And from now one item `90'000'001` will be the scroll that contains the mighty sword information and functionality.
You're able to create any item without client patches, they just look wrong. But warmane it's so modified and i dont think you can achieve the same result without fully patching the client ends (visually)
