you could always lower the event to 500ms instead of 1s if you want to lower the margin of error, but I don't really see a point

Well, since checking every 1000ms would result in the same duration for every player, it's fine anyway. The only change would be if the trial duration is e.g. 59 or 59.5 or 59.9 seconds.
