If you don't want to patch the core, you can use a module to easily do the exact same thing as 'multivendor' but with no core modification

Also, it doesn't take long to compile after you've done it once unless you either clean it or something changes that other features are dependent on and require it to be recompiled. That's why modules are a good thing, takes almost no time to update if you change something. Anyway, hope you find a solution.
