I've always downloaded the binary, i dont contirubte to heidi so i wouldnt have a reason to compile it myself

I think you're far too concerned about some abstract interpretation of security.

Building software or being open source doesn't prevent you from security issues. Did you code your OS from scratch? Did you build the hardware and write all your firmware from scratch? No. No reasonable person does that. The question should be is there a reasonable risk with HeidiSQL. It's reasonably safe. What data are you worried about it stealing? login credentials to your private server? Worried it will install a keylogger with it? Worried it will browse your filesystem?

The other perspective is if you like Navicat and trust them, you can pay for that product. I have. It's a great piece of software
