can someone explain what is the idea of using .dbc files? I cannot understand why for example if I want to create a new item I need to create .dbc files? From my understanding if I make changes in database table it should be enough. What .dbc file is doing?

Lol funnily enough I've just been looking into this myself. Basically database table only changes it for the server - you need to also make some adjustments in the .dbc file and copy that over to your client .mpq so that your client sees the same thing your server has. Otherwise for a new item you'll get a big ? display.

there are lot of cases when dbc is not exactly necessary but there is also lot of cases when it is....like item could work even when it doesnt have icon but weapons wouldnt work

That is interesting, I hadn't tried with a weapon yet. I noticed when I created a new tabard that it still largely functioned without any dbc/mpq edits, and it showed up as a ? in my bag, but then displayed the actual tabard icon when equipped which...is something.

The DBC's contain static information required by the client that is very unlikely to change except during a patch. You want to keep as much information client side as possible for bandwidth and performance reasons.
