For bigger commits and commits that alter/modify/change more complex things. Its absolutely neccessary when you start accepting work from so many people.

Looking at your git gui, I think what happened is that you forgot to add a commit message - all I see there is the template.

i didnt see a place where i had the option even to add a commit message. (i usually do this per a GUI)
