What lag? I think you refer to reducing update times. Takenbacon has just explained the gains of splitting the map.

I see your point.
If you have issues with 80 players in a 500x500m zone where only like 20 of them will see and interact with each other simultaneously, i expect optimization being in order instead of splitting the map into threads.

I can think of a thing like the opening of the dark portal or ahn'qiraj where 4 digits of players are in the same spot benefiting locally from additional layers. And i can also think of the remaining map benefiting a lot from multiple threads per map in a way similar to the proposal we're talking about.
But wintergrasp? That's just a couple players. Every raid has that.
