Yeah I'm not sure either honestly. Instancing zones for example requires an enormous amount of work to do it properly and safely and can't say i feel like going through that whole process again...

Are there even any large enough servers that are forked from AC that would directly benefit from such changes?

Probably asian servers they tend to have much bigger playerbase than the average westeren server

Realistically, if the rest of the codebase has had decent enough optimization passes the "stock" threading model is good for usually at least 6-8k players (spread out across multiple maps). I am personally a big fan of not adding unnecessary threads if there isn't a good enough justification for it. Usually it's like putting a bandaid over a much bigger problem when the underlying code itself is what needs work
