Can't you just have a flag, boolean or whatever, that tells the state of the bonfire? And then whenever the fire gets lit/unlit you just swap that flag?

Yes something like that is the current plan, static global Boolean flags, seperated per map, player script just reads and the bonfires write the flag

I guess if you say they should be active to start with, it just has to be set to true by default
