The file is stored on the disk, the loaded data is loaded into the actual memory. Maybe you can grab some stuff from memory while it's active but I don't know how and I doubt you'd be able to extract a file from it just like that.

I've never had this issue because I always keep backups which I'm guessing your learning now

he could read it directly from memory but it would take some time and lot of knowledge definitely more than redoing few spells
