ive been banned in minutes on retail back in wrath so im not so sure it was always done in waves

They do waves for bots and the like. If a player uses e.g. teleport cheats, they will be banned quite fast.

Blizz is pretty light on cheating. Most is done thru warden and manual review if there is enough algorithms being hit or user reports.
