A few people have said in the past that they were working on that to support cross-realm but that died out just as fast as it was mentioned. It's just that much work.

yeah i was looking at the chat code it could be done with relative ease, the other parts such as session would take a bit longer

Cross-realm would be nice but I'd much prefer it just to be able to split dungeons into one process, map 0/1 into one process etc to balance the load and not crash all zones if something breaks.

i once played on server which had crossrealm....i have no idea what core they were using but they created crossrealm from scratch and i think it cost 1 fulltime dev for 1 month

Yeah but it's also connected in one way or another. I highly doubt you can move chat and everything else will work as-is. I could be wrong though, of course.
