so the entire thing gets zlib DELFATEd down to a dozen kb or less, typically, which doesn't sound like much until you remember they're trying to store data by the bit instead of in a UINT32 or something

I can't guarentee that it wasn't changed in cata,but to my knowledge SMSG_OBJECT_UPDATE has worked exactly the same since vanilla, albeit TBC added some fly speed fields and WOTLK added some pitch fields for vehicles
