Yeah, I have some changes in my own core fork that I should try moving to a module instead if I can as well. I just haven't looked much into doing it yet, and I'm not sure if the nearby hooks will work for them.

You can prevent them from accepting a ress. It's how hardcore modules (many of them, at least) functions. You are permanently a ghost.
