If you're talking about friendly, hostile and neutral; that's only tied to the faction iirc.

some mobs seem to have been made passive (yellow) in wotlk compared to classic

Aggressive/defensive/passive are all react states. Hostile/neutral/whatever your friends are would be faction stuff (probably not the right names). There are some hostile (red) mobs that only have a defensive react state (like the tauren walking around Stranglethorn)
