That makes sense because there are no writing operations in the DB that can cause corruption at restoring the DB if you shutdown the servers. This will happen not often but the danger is there.

In the years I have used AC with hourly backups there has NEVER been any issues what so ever

Just because it's never happened to you doesn't mean there's no risk. As I said, the probability isn't very high, but if you want to be on the safe side, you should disable everything that can write to the database before backing it up.
