When I choose to open "worldserver.conf.dist" with notepad++ it automatically renames the files to ".conf" but the files themselves are still .dist files. Does this matter? If it matters how can I change them to .conf files?

It doesn't automatically rename files. It's just Windows that for some reason hides file extensions by default
