I get so confused and mix results with stripping away the .dist. For example, if I don't have `etc/modules/playerbots.conf.dist` the worldserver refuses to start.

Playerbots could have changed something
But generally speaking .dist is the distrubuted file while .conf is the actual configuration file

Iirc modules still require both .conf and .conf.dist files. While the dist is read as the fallback.
The core itself has the defaults hard coded as a fallback.
