the etc folder is in the folder you set when you ran cmake (defined with `DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX`)

go to modules, copy the `.conf.dist` file. remove the .dist, making it a .conf.

Then only ever edit the .conf file. .dist files are overwritten everytime you compile.
