So mistake one, I changed the dist to a config in the source directory yes. So I am editing the config file there, which is the wrong place if I am understanding.

Check the folder Honey mentioned but you as a user never change the source of the module that includes the config

cp ~/azerothcore-wotlk/modules/mod-assistant/conf/mod_assistant.conf.dist nano ~/azerothcore-wotlk/modules/mod-assistant/conf/mod_assistant.conf

Then I ran the nano command and it opened the config file in linux, which i edited and saved.
