Also within the scope of AzerothCore, what is considered "large scale"? I've seen a default number of 1000 in the conf files (seems a lot)

As soon as you advertise it you're at an increased risk.
Networking and security is a lot more than just ddos attacks. This goes very deep, from simply accessing your server and stealing data to manipulation or ransom activities.
