There's no way to distribute client patches from the server (in azerothcore, there are obviously servers that somehow manage this to a certain extent)

hmm fair enough. i just find it suprising as ive been on a couple of private servers before and have never applied a patch before

They've developed a system to manage it on their end but it's not public and it's highly unlikely to ever be.
