idk if this is a stupid thing to suggest since i havent worked in ubuntu in a while but did you `apt install mysql-server`

I haven't yet because I was having a hard time removing MariaDB (old) and installing MySQL

ok I think this time it works after I reboot Ubuntu after purging MariaDB
