it boils down to
- port forwarding
- IP in the worldserver and authserver.conf (If you want to connect from the servers)
- user rights not being limited to local
On the other hand, i strongly discourage opening the MySQL port. Unless you really know what you're doing.
Consider running server and DB on the same machine if they're seperate.
Consider running mysql CLI on the server instead of connecting remote.

Thank you for the reply will I be using the database often as currently I’m trying to use it to set an up for other to connect to but if that’s all I need it for then cli is fine. My worry is if I need it for loads more the cli is a little clunky. I’m setting everything up on proxmox in lxc so no gui.

not really, no. security is *your* responsibility as a host. secure your server and handle your problematic users yourself.
