btw, I edited the entry (127.0.0.1) to be the server's LAN IP and that worked. My guess is that it is supposed to be the external server address that somehow the client uses? I may try setting it to 0.0.0.0 to see what happens.

The authserver and worldserver.conf files by default bind to 0.0.0.0.

It’s the auto database that needs the actual ip addresses pointed to the core. Once the authserver does its job at login it’s handed off to the worldserver that lives at that realmlist IP. So conf files yes, auth database no.
