I'm starting super fresh here, I have a server (on my LAN) running acore and it appears ok. I add a user and when I run my desktop with the client (3.3.5a) I am able to login. However, when I try to load the realm it just refreshes and never loads it. I can't get in to create a character. Now I haven't done ANY config editing yet. Is that required?

Mainly you need to edit your acore_auth database realmlist with your IP information

You can leave the conf files untouched Out of Box and customize things from there as you see fit. The auth database needs your local and (if you want others to be able to access) your private routers IP
