Huh, interesting. I'm sure there was a config option for it, or in the realm list db. Does the world server check the auth as well or something? Must be something stopping you just connecting to the worldserver directly with a bad client right?

There is nothing. You can't connect directly to the worldserver, no, but once the authserver hands the player over to the worldserver it's done what it does and can just as well be shut down.

You can even connect using the same account twice if you connect to different realms (but using the same authserver). That should tell you just how much the worldservers talk to the authserver.

We are most likely use to dealing with different size setups.

I've just always kept it separated for multiple reasons. Script kiddies attempting a ddos is just one of them. That's why I host it in the oracle cloud in seperate regions.

Of course you can connect directly to the world server, it's got a port directly connectable on the public IP. Connecting to it is how the game is played. There has to be some sort of handoff between them, or else the world server re-checks auth.

Or you can really just connect to the world server as anyone, which sounds bad.

Like, a proper client doesn't have buttons on it to skip the auth server, but a misbehaving individual...
