OK. commands for debian and Ubuntu are interchangeable so no worries there.

I'd have a look at a couple extra guides to give you some creature comforts in Linux. Samba, VNC etc...
The conf.dist files need to be copied and renamed without the .dist on the end to function.

-Example: This will copy the playerbots module conf.dist and rename the copy as playerbots.conf
You would execute this command while inside the modules folder in the terminal
```sudo cp playerbots.conf.dist playerbots.conf```
There are a few goto daily driver commands you'll get used to using and things will get easier. If you got it compiled you're already on the right track.Samba is an open-source software suite that allows you to seamlessly share files, folders or other important data between Windows and Unix-based systems (Linux and macOS). It is like a bridge that connects your system to another system no matter what operating system you are using. It is one of the secure ways for remote
While I know folks are happy to help with the basics here - You might want to check out some linux nerd discords or the /r/selfhosted and /r/debian on reddit. Those have helped me a few times for sure
I got samba all set up, does this mean that I can actively edit the files in my virtual machine?
Yes, you should be able to set your share up as a mapped drive in windows and work with your files directly. Be sure to familiarize yourself with folder/file permissions.
chown and chmod commands are important to learn and understand
Sounds like you have a bit more configuring with Samba to get yourself access.
gotta create a samba user and set the share in the smb.conf
You're making progress for sure though
I've figured out how to copy and edit the configs by using samba as a visual rather than directly try to modify the files, I think the only thing I need to learn how to do now is how to use the SRC for a few modules
