vmangos is built to do exactly this, you just have to set the version in the config. This emulates early versions server side, pre nerfs creatures, old items drops etc

if you actually want the old talents and spells though, that requires using the old clients or custom patches

Are there equivalent cores for later expacs? That are also equipped to handle progression in the way vmangos does?

it depends how much you want really, just progressively unlocking content is pretty basic most emulators should support it

Oh okay, yea im mainly interested in unlocking content on a schedule but the guides i found didnt really go further than set up so wasnt sure this was a common thing or not
