we found out this might have been due to an older version of mpq editor. was unaware this tool was still in active development; i had been using the copy from back when i first started modding in 2023. the broken mpq could still be custom opened [in the latest version](http://www.zezula.net/en/mpq/download.html) by forcing as 1.0

✅ **Issue Solved**
To fix the issue, we had to do the following:

- Download the latest MPQ Editor (http://www.zezula.net/download/mpqeditor_en.zip)
- Open the MPQEditor
- Click on **File**
- Mouseover **Open MPQ(s)**
- Click on **Custom Open MPQ**
- Select the broken patch and click open
- Check **Force opening the MPQ as v 1.0** and click OK
- The patch will now open normally and the files can be extracted and put into a fresh MPQ patch
