You need to add your race and gender at the end as HuF/HuM not Hu_M/Hu_F iirc.
If you item is named Helm_Leather_D_01 put Helm_Leather_D_01.mdx in the itemdisplay and Helm_Leather_D_01_HuM.m2 as file name.

Not necessarily when I created my first item, it was explained to me like that, because I had items like that back then and I wanted to make the item available to everyone, regardless of race or gender, without having to enter it 100 times for each race in the DBC, so I was told to do it like that.
I can only pass on what someone tried to explain to me back then, and if that person was wrong, OK, then I know better now and can say in the future what is correct.
