I agree fully. The bit that makes it shady is that it is intentionally obfuscated, making it harder to reverse. Why obfuscate a launcher? What have you got to hide?

Hmmm, maybe the Launcher does that nowadays but when working at Ascension I wrote afew new layers of anti-cheat clientside that does this. It will search for various things inspired by the oldschool anticheat from back the days. Windows API makes it trivial to search for stuff like window titles, executable names and etc. That's enough information to detect a bunch of different bots/"hack tools" and etc. Was the 2nd clientside anticheat layer I wrote I think, wrote like 5 or 6 can't remember I'd have to count them.

Oh yea I'm not sure why they did that, but I commented on that before in one of the channels in here if you search my previous messages. I had some thoughts on maybe why, and knowing alittle bit of the guy who wrote the Launcher having worked there I'm not surprised to here it's obfuscated . But Ascension was making $2m million a year, there is no reason to be shady. Just keep selling soft p2w, conveince items, 55 transmogs, 55 mounts, 55 wings and etc. There is no reason to be shady at the scale Ascension operates.

The governor was killed because it was considered too intrusive, yet we find it okay to scan user processes / titles etc without giving notice as legally required?

I mean that's just the Windows API, even processes without escalated privileges can enumerate system processes. Practically every anticheat since like 2000 will do this basic layer of detection.

All the governor did was hash process names and that was considered too invasive

The shady bit is willfully not following required protocol

Shady? I've always happily disclosed many of the methods used to detect people cheating or botting because I hate those peeps. Downloading some crap they didn't even write, of course I'm going to use every tool available to detect and prevent that. It's far from the most intrusive thing, it's consider releatively basic and pre-historic for anticheat.

Pretty sure early 2000s anticheat did this like Gameguard or Punkbuster.
