I project that I've been working on, ppl decided this architecture:
Auth Server -> Char Server -> World Server.

When you enter your credentials, you're connecting to Auth Server. Auth Server gives you list of realms on succesful login.
After you choose realm, you're connected to Char Server, which gives you list of your current characters on the realm. And it's your main connection.

Char Server serves as a proxy to World Servers. So when you enter battleground or change the map, client doesn't do reconnect, but Char Server relays your traffic to some other World Server depending on map/instance/etc
